Halloween (welcome to Sam’s English Class)

Hello, everyone! And welcome to the blog for Sam’s English Class! I am happy to be able to finally post here and keep you all up to date with what we are doing in class.

I will try include the main points of what we did, the sentence structures we used, some of the vocabulary we covered and of course how everything went.

I generally try to update the blog post once a month depending if we have lesson or not and cover a few lessons at a time!

私たちが行ったことの要点、使用した文の構造、取り上げた語彙の一部、そしてもちろんすべてがどのように進んだのかを含めるようにします。

私は通常、レッスンがあるかどうかに応じて月に 1 回ブログ記事を更新し、一度にいくつかのレッスンを取り上げるようにしています。

Knock, knock (trick or treat):

I think it is important to at least have one activity that lets the students experience the thrill of trick or treating (even if it’s “candy-less” this time). That’s why this year I decided to make a “Halloween” themed door which opened to pictures of ghosts and other scary things. Selected students would come to the front of the class, knock on the door and say “trick or treat!” to reveal what was behind the door. We would then chorus this vocabulary together and as a class (yes, a sneaky way to introduce vocabulary!)

The kids seemed to have had a good time and we later used the vocabulary we learned here in a new song.

生徒たちにトリック・オア・トリートのスリルを体験させるアクティビティを少なくとも 1 つ設けることが重要だと思います（たとえ今回は「キャンディーなし」であっても）。 そこで今年は、幽霊やその他の怖いものの絵が開く「ハロウィーン」をテーマにしたドアを作ることにしました。 選ばれた生徒たちはクラスの前に来てドアをノックし、「トリック・オア・トリート！」と言いました。 ドアの向こうに何があるのかを明らかにするために。 それから私たちはこの語彙を一緒に、そしてクラス全体で合唱しました（そう、語彙を紹介する卑劣な方法です！）。

子どもたちはとても楽しかったようで、後でここで学んだ語彙を新しい歌で使いました。

 

Halloween snap:

A quick matching game using a deck of jack o’ lantern cards. The deck included jack o’ lantern faces with multiple different expressions (happy, sad, angry etc.) Firstly, the class was split into two teams and lined up facing the opposing team. The cards were then shuffled and placed on top of one another until a pair was made. Once a pair was made, that matching set was slapped, giving all of the previous cards to that team. Some of the reaction times from the students were pretty impressive! It shows I’m not getting any younger… Regardless, a fun, quick game that reviewed basic emotions!

ジャック・オ・ランタンのカードを使ったクイックマッチングゲーム。 デックには、さまざまな表情 (幸せ、悲しみ、怒りなど) を持ったジャック・オ・ランタンの顔が含まれていました。 まず、クラスを 2 つのチームに分け、反対側のチームを向いて整列しました。 次に、カードをシャッフルし、ペアができるまで互いの上に置きました。 ペアが作られると、その一致するセットは破棄され、前のカードがすべてそのチームに与えられました。 生徒たちの反応は非常に印象的でした。 これは私が若くなっていないことを示しています… とにかく、基本的な感情を復習する楽しくて簡単なゲームです!

 

Marco polo:

A classic hide and seek based game! I wore my werewolf mask and covered my eyes. I would say “marco” and the students would reply with “polo”. I would have to seek everyone out only using my hearing. A very tense game that I loved playing as a kid too! If we were to do this game again, I would replace the words related to the current topic (seems like a no brainer now but oh well!) Great fun all around! We also need to make sure no one is running next time to avoid any accidents!

古典的なかくれんぼベースのゲーム! 私は狼男のマスクをかぶって目を覆いました。 私が「マルコ」と言うと、生徒たちは「ポロ」と答えます。 私の聴覚だけを使って全員を探し出さなければなりません。 非常に緊張感のあるゲームで、私も子供の頃にプレイするのが大好きでした。 このゲームをもう一度やるとしたら、現在のトピックに関連する単語を置き換えるでしょう (今では簡単なように思えますが、まあまあ!) 全体的にとても楽しいです! また、事故を避けるために、次回は誰も走っていないことを確認する必要があります。

 

If I were a ghost (song):

Now this song was a lot of fun! It also helped us learn the sounds and names of different monsters. For example, a ghost says: “ooooooo!” and a Robot says: “beep bop!”. I always forget that the onomatopoeia between Japanese and English is different. If I am being completely honest, it was probably more fun for me than it was for the kids seeing everyone mimic the different creatures! The word “pirate” seemed to be one of the words that people had trouble with so we spent a little extra time with that.

さて、この曲はとても楽しかったです！ また、さまざまなモンスターの鳴き声や名前を学ぶのにも役立ちました。 たとえば、幽霊は「おおおおお！」と言います。 するとロボットが「ピーピー！」と言います。 日本語と英語のオノマトペが違うことをいつも忘れてしまいます。 正直に言うと、みんながさまざまな生き物の真似をするのを見るのは、おそらく子供たちよりも私にとって楽しかったでしょう。 「海賊」という単語は人々が苦手とする単語の 1 つであるようだったので、少し余分に時間を費やしました。

 

Final thoughts

This year’s Halloween lessons were a great success and a lot of fun! Although I am sad the “spooky season” has once again finished, I am looking forward to our end of Autumn (our next topic being: “things to do inside on a rainy day”) and Christmas lessons.

今年のハロウィンレッスンもとても楽しくて大成功でした！ 「不気味な季節」がまた終わってしまうのは残念ですが、秋の終わり（次のテーマは「雨の日に室内でできること」）とクリスマスのレッスンを楽しみにしています。
